The Art of Strings

Palace Theatre in Hilo

“The Art of Strings”, is a unique multimedia concert featuring Iggy Jang and the HPAF string program, juxtaposed against the work of evocative Hilo artist Christina Skaggs. The name Iggy Jang is well known to Hilo classical music lovers—he serves as concertmaster of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra as well as String Director of the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival. Of special interest to Hilo audiences is the guest appearance of local favorite Cheryl “Quack” Moore.

Cendrillon by Pauline Viardot

Palace Theatre in Hilo

On Sunday, July 20 at 7 pm the second HPAF/Palace Theatre performance of the summer season takes place-- a completely theatrically staged opera, Cendrillon, the Cinderella story, by French composer, Pauline Viardot. Director Chuck Hudson calls it “A delightful fairy tale that is definitely family-friendly” It is presented with English supertitles.

An Evening with Ricky Ian Gordon
Wednesday, July 23, 7:00 p.m.
Davies Chapel on the HPA campus

Spend an evening with one of America's most acclaimed living composers of art song, opera and musical theater-- Ricky Ian Gordon, best known for his 2011 opera, John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, Mr. Gordon's songs have been performed by some of the biggest names in the business... Audra McDonald, Renee Fleming and Kristin Chenoweth among others. His most recent work, premiering now to critical acclaim at Ft. Worth Opera, is A Coffin in Egypt, notable because mezzo soprano Frederica van Stade has come out of retirement to sing the lead role. Don't miss this chance to meet Ricky Ian Gordon and experience his amazing works as performed by HPAF students, and the composer himself.

This is a free concert at Davies Chapel on the HPA campus.  Please bring items for the food bank at Annunciation Church.
